What is Modeling & Simulation (M&S)?

Modeling and Simulation (M&S) is a critical capability within the Department of Defense (DoD), serving as a cornerstone for military readiness, acquisition processes, and operational planning. The DoD defines M&S as the use of models and simulations to develop data as a basis for making managerial or technical decisions. This encompasses a wide range of applications, from individual weapon system performance to large-scale joint force operations.

At its core, DoD M&S is categorized into three primary domains: live, virtual, and constructive (LVC). Live simulation involves real people operating real systems, such as field training exercises. Virtual simulation encompasses real people operating simulated systems, like flight simulators. Constructive simulation involves simulated people operating simulated systems, often used for wargaming and course of action analysis.

One key application of M&S in the DoD is the acquisition process. The Simulation and Analysis for Acquisition (SAA) framework integrates M&S throughout the acquisition lifecycle, from requirements definition to test and evaluation. This approach helps reduce costs, mitigate risks, and improve system performance before significant resources are committed to production. The DoD's M&S efforts are coordinated across the department to promote efficiency and effectiveness. This coordination helps ensure that different branches of the military can work together seamlessly in simulated environments, just as they would in real-world operations. It also allows for the sharing of best practices and resources, maximizing the return on investment in M&S technologies.

Advanced M&S technologies are increasingly leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning to enhance fidelity and decision support capabilities. For instance, the Joint Artificial Intelligence Center (JAIC) is exploring ways to integrate AI into M&S platforms to improve predictive analytics and autonomous system behaviors in simulated environments. As these technologies evolve, they promise to revolutionize how the DoD conducts training, mission planning, and capability development in an increasingly complex and data-driven operational landscape.
